sixer bunk bed

The design build process is often a puzzle, but when the pieces finally come together, it's a thing of beauty. I encountered quite the puzzle while working on this set of bunk beds for a client's lake cabin. The challenge? Design these for a children's loft space that is only accessible by a narrow ladder opening. They must have the ability to be assembled in place and then disassembled for easy removal in the future.

The solution was to create a large kit of parts using steel framing, custom-made brackets, intricate hardware, and laminate plywood sheets for long-term durability. The plywood shell acts as a membrane to prevent racking while also sculpting the form and keeping the kiddos from rolling out of bed. The two bunks are mirrored and can sleep six total with the extended trundles.
